Praising in this storm
As of tomorrow night, I will be working night shift at my job. It should be very interesting and fun. I’m looking forward to it though. Hopefully, that means that I will be posting and updating more. So for those that would like to stay updated with me, here’s your chance. LOL
Lately, I have had no idea what has been going on in my life. Life seems like such a complexity. So many things happen, yet so many of them are mysteries. The Word of God is such a wonder to me because It remains the same yet applies to everything. One passage of Scripture that sticks in my head right now is 2 Peter 1:3 – 4.
“His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to [3] his own glory and excellence, [4] by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. “
God has given us everything that we need. We lack nothing except for the desire to follow whole-heartedly and unwavering. God is good. He treats His children with great love and honor. Today, I was hit by a passage of Scripture that kind of just stuck out to me as I was reading through it in church tonight. Part of 1 Peter 5 says,
“Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.”
This passage struck me because it starts out speaking of humility and then leads into the rest of the passage. It then intrigued me to a do a mini-study on humility. I find that humility is one of those things that hurts when you learn about it and see it in your life, you don’t want to tell others because of your pride — or because you know that when you tell them, they will respond by saying something like, “yeah, I was thinking the same thing.” If that doesn’t kick you when you are down, then I don’t know what does.
Now, I will mention a thought that I never finished in one of my past posts. Have you ever thought about the humility of God. Obviously He must be humble or else we could not try to be Christ-like and try to be humble at the same time. He must be humble. How is He humble though when He seeks to glorify Himself? Well, the first is rather obvious and is plainly spoken of in the Bible. Jesus Christ came from the celestial and glorious heaven to this sin-filled world to die for the wretched heathen. How could this be? He shows this incredible humility all throughout His ministry here on earth. It is amazing though. Though He became servant to all, He magnified others and in return glorified Himself. He still does that in so many ways. He will work in our lives and expect us to glorify Him through those things. When we do, the relief and joy is so incredibly amazing that we must praise Him. He is also humble in His dealings with us, His children. Never have I known someone that is so long suffering and kind and good after the wretchedness that I demonstrate in my life. He continues to be good and show His love and open doors that we definitely do not deserve to go through. He is so wonderful! What an incredible rebuke to us, His imitators!
God has been good though. He always is. I find the titles of my writing this time very appropriate for the feeling of stirred emotions in my life currently. I pray that everyone reading this now will find the ever-loving grace of God a comfort. Do not be brought down by circumstances (I say this to myself more than to you). Just remember that as a Christian, our circumstances do not determine our joy. He is our Rock and Mighty Fortress. Take your rest in Him.
Finding Shelter in the Shadow of His Wing,
Josh
